Cholera in the nineteenth century forced the wealthy classes to clean up the slums where they kept their workers — not out of generosity, but because the virus crossed every border of class. AIDS revealed the systematic abandonment of Africa by the West and, within Western societies, the abandonment of the invisible: homosexuals, drug addicts, prostitutes. The virus does not attack randomly. It illuminates the zones of suffering that power prefers not to see.

It is a biological entity that participates, like all living forms, in the gradual rise of life toward a higher consciousness.
